Introducing Young People to Film at Cinémathèque Française
In the age of limitless virtual cinematheques, where all films are accessible, children and young people are usually only familiar with contemporary films, those presented to and produced for them by the media. In order to encourage children from a young age to explore other cinemas and to broaden their notion of film, the pedagogical division at Cinémathèque Française explores various approaches to film education, including:
- “Le cinéma cent ans de jeunesse”: These Europe-wide workshops link an analytic approach to film practice, each year exploring a different issue.
- Introductory seminars: by showing clips from various films, they rely on the surprise of these encounters and their power to convince in order to awaken the interest of children and to inspire them to explore connections between films. This work resulted in the book series Atelier cinéma on various motifs in the cinema, for example, small/large, fear in the cinema, or cats in the cinema.
The lecture will present several methods of film pedagogy developed in this context.
Nathalie Bourgeois is director of the education division at Cinémathèque Française. She is the author of the DVD Petit à petit, le cinema from the collection Eden cinéma; editor of the children’s book series Atelier cinéma and compiled the film Jeunes Lumières.
