Film on Film:
Using the Example of »M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder« (Fritz Lang, D 1931)
Films that take an analytic look on films, films that comment films are “Filmvermittelnde Filme” (engl. films about film). The project “Kunst der Vermittlung: Aus den Archiven des Filmvermittelnden Films” has taken on the task of researching such films, collecting them in a data bank, and presenting them to a public. In this way, current debates on film pedagogy are complemented with historical perspectives and those interested are inspired to work with these films.
»M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder« (D 1931), Fritz Lang’s first sound film, is one of the most-analyzed works in the realm of film on film. Using exemplary film clips, in this lecture we will explore the possibilities of using film to speak about the aesthetic, materiality, and history of film. The spectrum stretches from the interview film, through the study of an actor in the individual shot , to a detailed analysis of the opening sequence by way of split screen.
“Kunst der Vermittlung: Aus den Archiven des Filmvermittelnden Films” is a project of “Entuziazm: Freunde der Vermittlung von Text und Film e.V.” and is supported by Kulturstiftung des Bundes, in cooperation with Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung.
