Cinema of the Mind: Film and Art, Art and Film

There is nothing new about the influence of cinema on the fine arts, or the role played by art in the cinema. Artists use film perspectives and techniques, and video installations or film documentations have long become standard in the process of artistic creation. Artists even become successful filmmakers, without giving up their old subject, the best example here being American artist and prize-winning filmmaker Julian Schnabel. Alfred Hitchcock had Salvador Dalí design sets for his films. Artists today use film stills as the basis of their painting. As a result, the visual language of both genres becomes in part similar, without having to change sides.

For this year’s conference, 12 Bremen artists will present their work in an exhibition on the subject of art and film. The exhibition, curated by Tom Gefken, takes visitors on a journey between the cinema and fine art, a journey that can allow us all to discover films of our own.
