Andante con moto quasi allegretto:
Musicality in the Cinema as (Re)Education
I would like to discuss the cinema as a site of an éducation musicale. What I’m postulating is not a seeing experience and recognition, but one that conceives a musical elevation over the images and the education of the listener beyond representation. To do so, I will only consider the actual production, creation of music in film, the performative image of musical evidence in the film plot. How the musical grabs hold of perception, challenges it, and begins to lead a life of its own in the sensual encounter with and recognition of the world: this is what the lecture will bring to our ears, and elevate the cinema to a (often neglected) resonant, sounding paideia.
