1 4th International Bremen Film Conference:

»Film Education and Public Outreach«

Film has been used as an educational tool since its very beginning. This is especially true of the educational film and the teaching film. Since the 1910s, film has been used as an instrument of aesthetic education, for bringing art and culture to a broader public. Whether for cultural or commercial purposes, the cinema has been formative of personality since its very beginnings.

What approaches, methods, and media are used to educate today on film and to communicate film to the public? What roles do institutions like the film museum, public cinema, school, film school, and university play in film education? How do films play a role in personality formation? And to what extent is film itself a means for reaching different publics? This year’s Bremen conference will present from January 16 to 18 an international spectrum of various positions and approaches to film pedagogy and outreach. For example, the approach developed in France, to teach film as an art form, or the English concept of “film literacy.” This discussion of methods will be complemented by project reports and film programs.

For the organizers of the conference, Fachbereich 9 at Universität Bremen, Kino 46, and the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung, the notion of education and outreach is a central part of the program. The conference is intentionally directed towards the wide public. This guarantees not least the close interaction between lectures, discussions, experiential reports, and film showings.
