Teaching Moving Image Media Literacy

Rather than arguing that »film literacy« has to be added to the ever-lengthening list of topics that have to be taught in 21st century classrooms, I will argue that it is the concept of literacy itself that now has to include the knowledge, skills and understanding associated with moving image media (mainly film and TV), rather than being just concerned with print. In an international context there are immediate problems with the translation and interpretation of the English word »literacy«, which I will explore briefly. Then I will describe the evolution of Reframing Literacy, an initiative in the UK led by the British Film Institute, which aims to establish the study of moving image media as a normal part of the literacy curriculum in Early Years settings and in primary schools.

Cary Bazalgette worked at the British Film Institute from 1979 to 2007, having previously been a teacher of English and filmmaking in London secondary schools. She was Head of BFI Education from 1999 to 2006, leading the BFI’s commitment to developing new approaches to teaching and learning about the moving image media, particularly for the 3-14 age group. She is now working as a freelance researcher, writer and consultant specializing in media literacy and in children’s media.
